DID YOU KNOW THAT...?
Grodziec Castle is located on an extinct volcano. The lonely hill is located in the northern part of Kaczawskie Foothills and is visible from a long distance.
The bulkhead often hosts television and film crews. Within its walls were filmed the series Visors and Hoods, The Witcher, the films Fanny Hill, the Devil's Flower, also the theatrical performance Romeo and Juliet
The lands on which Złotoryja lies according to historical records in the 10th century belonged to the Trzebowians — a West Slavic tribe from the Lechic group, whose settlement areas stretched between Nisa Szalona and Kaczawa.
Okay, but why is the name Złotoryja? The beginning of the current - final name of the city should be sought in the 12th century when gold mining was intensified on the initiative of Bolesław the High, which for diggers pulled from Germany due to small deposits was not the only occupation. A role was also cultivated and crafts were taken care of, and the settlement, which initially occupied the areas west of Kopacz, grew rapidly. The described colony then adopted the name Goldberg, which over time turned into Złotoryja.
The year 1211 was a landmark for our city. At that time, we were the first in Poland to receive Mageburg city rights from the granting of Henryk the Bearded. Interestingly, in order to encourage potential new settlers coming to Złotorya, he used numerous errors, including exemptions from taxes, duties or offered wide powers in the field of hunting and fishing. The city then received the name"Aurum” (from Latin Gold)
Few cities in Lower Silesia can compare with Złotoryja in terms of tourist value. Among the wealth of attractions that the city offers, there are as many as 300 monuments. It is mandatory to see: the Blacksmith Tower, the Church of Saint Hedwig, the Church of the Nativity of the Blessed Virgin Mary, the Church of the Holy Cross, the former Franciscan monastery, the 14th-century ramparts, the complex of historic houses in the Old Town, the Town Hall and the Fountain of the Dolphins from the 17th century.
In the Gold Museum, visitors can see old mining tools and gold rinsing equipment, as well as a unique collection of minerals from the Lower Silesia region. The days when gold mining flourished in Złotorya is reminiscent of the “Aurelia” mine, and the old traditions come to life anew during the competition in flushing gold.
A separate mention should be made to Wolf Mountain. It used to be an active volcano towering above the city, and now there is a geological reserve here — you can enter the interior of the volcano and see stagnant columns of basalt lava and forms formed from fossilized volcanic ashes.

Złotoryja lies in a band of extinct volcanoes. You see so well! Volcanoes are in Poland and in Lower Silesia we have quite a lot of them. Among others, Wilcza Góra (in Złotorya itself), Eszrzyca, or Grodziec. You can find more information here: https://www.gorykaczawskie.pl/
In 1234, a Franciscan monastery was erected.
In 1332, Złotoryja, already under the reign of the king of Bohemia, received a monopoly on salt trade, which in those days was a very valuable and valued mineral.
In 1526 Złotoryja passed under the rule of the Habsburgs.
In 1553, a plague passed through the town, which reduced the numbers by half.
In 1742 Złotoryja entered the Prussian state and became the main textile centre.
On 15 October 1884 Złotoryja obtained a railway connection to Legnica.
In 1900, the first telephone was launched in the city.
On February 13, 1945, it was liberated from Nazi occupation. Since that year, the town has been called Złotoryja.
In 1945, in the vicinity of Złotorya, a manuscript of Pan Tadeusz was found stolen by the Nazis in Lviv, which then went to the Ossolineum in Wrocław.
In 1992, the Polish Brotherhood of Gold Diggers, which is active to the present day, was founded. This organization organizes the Polish Gold Flushing Championships annually.
